Hi everyone, Recently, I was tensed to see my kid visiting the sites that he shouldn’t have. I do know that there are certain parental control software that can act as good watchdogs, but I need a one that can help me to view the things that my kid is doing at home. Its good to have a look at whats going on….if he is really accessing those sites or they are just by chance….!!!

Please do tell me if you have a solution to this…its really getting on my nerves!!!

Does your child know enough to clear the history of the web browser? That might be the simplest way to monitor what your child has been accessing.

I'm sure others will suggest something a little more elaborate, but this is the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

Best way would be to monitor what they view and keep the computer in a open area.

Another way would be to install Firestarter and white list all the sites, i.e., block all sites, unless you specifically allowed them.

Have you tried OpenDNS? From The Site: OpenDNS protects millions of people a day across hundreds of thousands of schools, businesses and homes. We block phishing sites, give you the power to filter out adult sites and proxies among more than 50 categories, and provide the precision to block individual domains.

Its free, and they have instructions on how to set it up, also you will need to create an account with them to control what can, and cant be viewed.

OpenDNS.com (http://www.opendns.com/)

As for viewing your child's screen try VNC, its build into ubuntu ive used it before, just:

System> Preferences> Remote Desktop

If you just want to SEE (not control) is desktop w/o him knowing set it up this way: (the port is 5900, so you will have to open that up to connect to the VNC server from outside your network. you can do that here: http://portforward.com/routers.htm)

privoxy might be a logging solution. I use it to block my son's access, but it can also be set to log what's visited.

Don't you think that's a bit intrusive? Spying on your kid and watching everything he does without him knowing? Kids are going to visit pages like that no matter what you do. Spying would probably just lead to trust issues and cause even more problems.

If you're really that intent on censoring what he views, just install one of those programs that filters out websites. It sure beats getting all paranoid and watching every single move he makes.

I use OpenDNS at home myself. I like it I used the router option. This way it protects all the computers in my house. I have had great success with it.

That's nonsense. If the parents have made it clear that those kind of sites aren't allowed in the home, it is the child breaking the trust rule. Let's let the parent be the parent shall we? I'm sure they will approach this in a wise and prudent manner. Furthermore it is probably illegal for the child to be using those sites and the parents also have a right to protect their own name.
