I downloaded the file ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso
Does this file extract it self while installing or do I have to extract it first?
This will be on a computer that has ubunto 5.1 installed.

You don't have to extract it yourself. Use Brasero (or any Linux Burner you have installed) to burn it to disk. If you're using Brasero, choose the "Burn Image" option.

Just be sure that you checked the MD5 hash of your ISO file before burning it. Use a lower burn speed (4x) maybe.

If you donīt have separate home partition back up your data following this (http://psychocats.s465.sureserver.com/ubuntu/backup) guide or make separate home partition. (http://psychocats.s465.sureserver.com/ubuntu/separatehome)

Can this file be burnt on a Windows computer?
The computer I am going to install it on and the one that I downloaded it on has Ubuntu 5.1 installed and nothing else.
The Windows computer is a seperate machine.
I just not sure what burning software came with 5.1 right out of the box.
