View Full Version : Can any one suggest a name for a new computer shop?

Ripfox

I am opening a new store in my home town and want to get your input on a cool name for it. I know there's funny names like hyper-global-compu-mega-net (simpsons) and I thought of "The PWN Shop" (was the name of someones blog already) but I need something catchy and functional.

I will do repairs as well.

Thanks all!

Here's a few:

-Pea Sea
-Compineer
-Computer Factory
-Hz So Good (A pun, Hurts So Good, from the game "Space Quest VI")
-Hot Rod Computers
-Lolocopter Computers
-Edison's
-Tesla's
-Computer Forest

That's all I have for right now, I'm sadly uncreative right now.

Since it is a business, you are probably going to want to target the 'average' / 'below-average' computer users if you are wanting to fix computers. You know, the users who refer to their machines as the 'CPU' or the 'hard drive'--the ones that come in wanting a new machine because theirs is a year old and too slow because it has virii, spy/ad-ware and pointless startup programs along with Bonzai Buddy. Those are the users that you offer virus detection and spyware removal/cleanup and charge them $50/hr. Or perhaps on site calls for more for the user's convenience. Those particular services will offer you the highest return for the least amount of effort (ie: compile a cd of utilities to automate the tasks of scanning & removal etc). You could then offer them software (available at your store of course) to help with the problems and even upgrades or new machines.

You could walk on the dark side and be unhanded about the business too (say that you will buy their brand new machine, or offer a trade-in, clean up their machine (software along with physical cleaning--perhaps do a gaming case and throw in a mid level 3d accel. video card) and then resell it for double the value, but we are all good people :)

Either direction, you should choose a name that isn't niche. You need to be recognized among the average/sub-average user and market accordingly. Choosing a name like 'The PWN Shop' will not get you the market you are looking for because: average users will have no idea how to say it/what it means, the users you hope to target are educated enough to go to ncix.com, tigerdirect and newegg and it doesn't sound professional. You may get the occasional 'power' user who knows wth they are talking about that just needs a new power supply because it just peaced on them randomly, but you are looking and need return customers--not casual. With those kind of online stores, it is getting increasingly difficult to compete with their pricing and service (which is why you might want to consider focusing on support/services side of operations). Also, the name of the shop should reflect quality, professionalism, solid service, support and community.

Everything I have mentioned is purely my opinion, but I would strongly suggest you consider the advice carefully. Perhaps you could name your store after your town/division/region or something that is uniquely understood by its residents (a popular event or location)? Say you lived in Nelson, you could name your store "Nelson Computer Centre (NCC)". Or maybe a random noun-based name along with the words "Computer Store, Shop, Link, Resource, etc", ex:
Rose Field Systems (RFS). Limiting it to 3 nouns would probably help for acronyms (most people seem to love the TLA[three letter acronyms]s anyways :)).

Anyways, I wish you the best of luck in your business venture! Let us know if you choose a name :)

I already have a good customer base, as I have been doing repairs/cleanup for years. It is just now that I can afford to rent a store front, and you are right about the hardware business...hard to compete. But, I live in a fairly small community and have no lack for interested clients thankfully! :)

I like the idea of using the town name/region in the name.

Another good idea would to be to offer a computer recycling service. Most old PCs just get chucked with the rest of the hard rubbish where they can be bad for the environment.

How about:

Tech Setters "Show some geeky character setting a broken PC straight"

The Hardware Zone (Sports theme mixed with PC sales and support)

PeaSea Shop ( Make some sort of Pea cartoon character riding a computer-shaped surfboard coming to the rescue)

The Mega Bite / The Giga Bite/ The Terra Bite / The Peta Bite (Show some sort of alligator or shark attacking a PC with a sub title "We take a bite out of your PC problems" or some **** like that.

Quantum Overhaul (futuristic computer repair with space costumes and decor)

The Comp Stomp (a sort of redneck computer sales theme)

The Dot Pitch (mix football, printers, and computers into one)

Ultra Silicon Sales & Repair (USSR) with a sort of communist russian theme

Sudo Support or just Sudo (A linux flavored repair shop) With a tagline "We get to the root of the problem" or something like that.

The Blue Screen (A windows theme with blue screens of death painted on all the walls)

Control Alt Delete (A logo with a hand hitting these three keys on a keyboard)

There are tons of possibilities. Good luck.

I have a question. What is it about your shop that is going to set it apart from the all the other shops??? Are you going to specialize in Linux installs???
General Repairs??
Business or home?? Rich or poor??
I think the name should be the mantra of what defines your business.
One thing I read along time ago, which seems to make sense. If you're a repair shop don't locate it in a high traffic area otherwise, you'll wind up spending the day answering questions, paying high rent other than your core business of fixing stuff.
My two cents....

Check the trademark protections before you shy away from a name you really like.

The names like Cornhusker and Computer Overall Repair are fairly generic/descriptive lending it hard for someone else using a similar name to challenge you. Especially the case if you are not going to be in directly competing market.

Bits & PC's is the name of the shop I use when I finally throw up my hands and give up. (they have software I do not have and can not afford that they can use to fix a really kludged machine .. or to diagnose one.)

Not an original name.

And there is more than one .. it is a FLAT RATE SHOP, so they are always busy!

I still think "We Do Windows .. Computer Repair" would be a good name since 99% of the work will be on Windows machines.

Well for a name it depends on your target audience and how much attention you really want to get.
Naming something is one of the hardest things to do trust me, but here are a few off the top of my head:

"Professional" sounding names:
Home Computers inc
The Computer shoppe
PC's for people
Gigabyte Goods

Fun:
The Geeq shop
Puters r us
The puter place
the compy cross

For morons:
Things that go beep beep
New fangled typewriters
Is that a toaster?

Other:
Floppys
Bluescreens (great for windows PC's ;))

Sometimes its good to combine names and have fun, you never know what you will get.
