Hardy Heron lack of sound

Aloha everyone!

I am currently using an Acer Aspire 9410 laptop and have made the decision of upgrade to from Gutsy to Hardy. Unfortunately, there is no sound no matter what I do...this makes me a sad panda T_T

I am quite a n00b at this and I would appreciate it a thousandfold if I was walked through (like a little child) on all possible solutions.

Two places I would try to change things.
First is the volume icon, the speaker icon. Double click on it and see if there are some invalid settings.
The second place to try is System->Preferences->Sound. See if your web cam is the default speaker. Don't laugh, I saw it happen on my PC.
