Basic questions on AVN.

I'm a wary Ubuntu noob who knows that bad things happen when I play with Terminal too much. However, I would really like to install AVN. It's available via Synaptic. Which packages do I have to install? Will they be 'development' or 'stable'? Will it update automatically? Will it 'just work' and install itself (I have fully updated Hardy working perfectly)?
