I figured that some people here might be interested in this... Good to see another well made product (which I use) recognized by big business.
From Slashdot.org:
"VideoLAN has long been known as a mature open source project for video playback and transcoding on the PC. Now, Neuros and Texas Instruments have sponsored a port of VLC to their next generation open set-top box. The idea is to allow developers to easily create interesting plug-ins for recording and transcoding applications for the set-top box which will automate functions previously requiring a PC, like formating recordings for a portable player or streaming to another device on the LAN or the Internet, etc."

ahh i love these stories
VLC FTW
best video program ever, its on all my computers, i want more and more companies to invest in more and more opensource programs. thats one of the reasons i use opensuse is the amount of time and money they put into porgrams like mono, or all the kde development

It is perhaps the best FOSS video player ever made (on balance of ease-of-use, supported codecs, and features). A very worthy project! :)
I just wish they'd fix the Mozilla browser plugin. It's been broken for years and no-one has any firm ideas why.

And I thought mplayer is much mature and feature richer (please don't confuse mplayer and it's sucky GUI).

On Linux I prefer mplayer and the gnome-mplayer GUI (Written in GTK+ 2 so it fits nicely into your desktop) and the geck-mediaplayer as the mplayer browser plugin (If anyone is interested: Debs can be found here (http://www.getdeb.net/app/GNOME+MPlayer) and[http://www.getdeb.net/app/Gecko+Media+Player]here[/url]).
On Windows nothing beats VLC player or even comes close it (as a movie player). Light, easy to use and plays nearly everything you throw at it, without the need to install the Mega-Monstah-CodecZ-maybe-a-virus.exe

thx to the person who created this thread. it is gud to hear the truth 'bout the only true no-problem & all-formats supported and platform independent media player available.
I'm using only VLC since many years and am extremely happy that a student project created for streaming Videos on the LAN( hence the name VLC( Video LAN Client) has grown into such a remarkable success story!!:)
