Is this available in the repo's yet?

Or, when should we expect it?

Also, is anyone running it? How is it, is it buggy?

Im trying to slowly convert myself from 3.5 to 4 but so far, the 4.0 branch does not have enough features to be very usable. 4.1 is where I plan to make the jump from 3.5, so Im wondering if the beta is worth trying so that I can make a better transition, or if I just continue to wait until january.

This is something I would like to know about too.

KDE 4.0.4 is in the repos at the time of writing. KDE 4.1.0 is scheduled to be released at July ~29. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE_4#Release_schedule.

Im currently running 4.04 along side of 3.5.

I find that 4.04 is just missing too many features to be useful.

Im also aware that 4.1 is due on july 29th. Thats why I'm asking if the beta is usable. So I can determine if I should load it up and start using it now, or wait unitl july to jump on board. Either way, 3.5 is likely to be my main environment until july, Im just trying to determine if its a slow move, or a quick jump is all.

I haven't tried compiling it myself yet, but it looks like the 4.1 beta 1 (4.0.80) should pop up in our repositories soon.

kde.org (http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.1-beta1.php) says:

Get it, run it, test it

Community volunteers and Linux/UNIX OS vendors have kindly provided binary packages of KDE 4.0.80 (Beta 1) for most Linux distributions, and Mac OS X and Windows. Be aware that these packages are not considered ready for production use. Check your distribution's software management system or for distribution specific instructions see the following links:

Fedora
Debian has KDE 4.1beta1 in experimental.
Kubuntu packages are in preparation.
Mandriva
openSUSE
Windows
Mac OS X
So, please be our canarie bird and try it, then report back to us. :>

well, I wasnt looking to be the official ubuntu forums kde4.1 beta test case, but that might just be what I end up.

Im not using 4.0 anyway, so if 4.1 proves buggy, its not going to mean anything. Im guessing we should see it soon.

So, what am I going to do to instal it? Is it in the main repo's, or do I need to add or enable one of them? Im guessing a synaptic search for kde-desktop 4.1 or beta should be what Im looking at?

I'll try it out, but I have to get it installed first, and I have to have time to play around with it.....that seems to be the main stumbling block right now.

Dunno about the Kubuntu packages of course, but I was running it briefly the other day (after GNOME got broken for a few hours in Mandriva development branch) and it seemed quite a bit improved from 4.0, but still slightly rough. I'd say 4.1 final may well be at the point of actually being usable for most people, though.
