Take a look at this: http://www.ubuntu.com/dell
After you install Ubuntu, post anything related to Dell compatibility here (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=342).

Now don't rush, he's not even installed the system yet.

For Original Poster:

It's funny how people just now start to realize that you really don't even need to install any software to rescue files, repair partitions or even wipe out viruses(ubuntu has antivirus tools too) from windows partitions. This has been possible for ages and it's always nice to hear people that they have discovered this "by themselves" rather than asking "HOW CAN I RECOVER MY FILES I DESTROYED MY HDD!!" since it's just stupid.

Keep up the good work discovering things on your own, it's easier than it sounds. :guitar:

And y'know, I'd be serious in looking at having Ubuntu as my main os if only I could:
<snip>
That'd do it for me. So where do I go from here?

+1 to the wise words of kesman;

I'd suggest a dual boot to start with; then when you realise you're booting into Ubuntu more than Windows: no need to say more... discover it yourself!

Thanks for this information - much appreciated.

I guess the next part will be to shrink the now working Vista partition, so that I have enough room to properly install Ubuntu.

Which, in itself, presents me with another query:

Will I still be able to boot both afterwards?
Does Ubuntu overwrite the boot sequence, and allow a choice (between Vista & Ubuntu)?

I guess then the next stage would be to try to find a working fix for the inactive wireless card in Ubuntu. Once I have the wireless connection working, I can start having a good fiddle (oo-er).

:)

Well, the MBR would be overwritten with GRUB. You can surely boot into Vista and Ubuntu separately.

And at time of installation Ubuntu will ask you if and how you want to repartition your disk.
the whole install should take no more than half an hour.

Looks to me the thread was split from a Testimonial discussion.
