Is it possible to have Gnome adopt the desktop-right-click behaviour that XFCE can do? The one that pops up the "start" or applications menu on the current mouse position (ala fluxbox, xfce)?

I'm no expert, but I stumbled on this topic just after I saw your question.

I don't believe so. In fact if you run Nautilus in Fluxbox it kills the right-click menu.
