Linux is everywhere. But it's not so easy to remember what "everywhere" is so, let's get together and make a list of everything which runs Linux.

Ok, not "my Nokia N54 runs Android", but for instances: "Linux can be found on mobile phones."

I'll start:

Someone made a toaster than ran one of the BSDs.

Here it is (NetBSD): http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2005/08/11/toaster-pc-runs-bsd-and-makes-toast

Heh, I bought a Netgear router recently that came with a hardcopy of the GPL v2, LGPL, and BSD licenses. It also had a sticker on the instructions with an address on where to download the source code.

Wireless router, which was already said.

The computers that Tur-Bus in Chile uses to book tickets run Fedora. I found that out this weekend when I noticed the little stylized F down in the corner.

How does a car run Linux? Radio and various stuff like that?

No, the bus/transportation network in question uses some sort of electronic ticket system. Electronic tickets are quite widespread these day.

I'm not sure how the system works, but there might be an ARM chip based ticket reader on the bus that decrements credit from your e-ticket. The fact that it runs Fedora is making me think it is more likely to be a proper x686 architecture with a CPU. Maybe there is a PC somewhere next to the driver :)

************************************************** ******

On the other hand, most cars have full blown electronic system these days. Not the electronic injection, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was linux running somewhere in a car.

What about linux in GPS terminals?

Well thanks to Intel, it should be on it's way (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/intel-working-on-linux-car-computing-initiative/)

And another place Linux is used: Formula 1 simulations (http://www.itpro.co.uk/features/192522/linux-and-formula-one.html)

I live in Las Vegas and I was at a casino the other day and I saw a tech rebooting a video slot machine and on the boot up screen I saw an ASCII tux flash by.

I also seem to remember a watch either Timex or Casio that used to be made that ran Linux

Analog Watches (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/9771/) :D

:) the watch in the link is compatible with linux, it is not linux based, but you weren't far off the mark.....

Have a look at this linux based watch made by the IBM http://www.research.ibm.com/WearableComputing/linuxwatch/linuxwatch.html

Their aim must have been displaying the capabilities of the hardware/software expertese they have, rather than coming up with a potential commercial product.

Any ATMs using linux?

I think the question is not "where do you find linux", but it should have been "where do you find processors".

No, the watch is a USB storage device, you can install Linux on it and then boot it using any usb-bootable computer (quite handy imo).

I suppose the NSA use it in their comps? I know the US millitary also use Linux on some comps, but they vary between Windows and OS X too.

I personally prefer Linux compared to any other operating system. Microsoft lovers like to talk about their wonderful Vista all the time, it seems. Why would anyone use Vista...

didn't mention this first off as I couldn't remember where I got the picture from (still can't)
but someone snapped this in a photo booth not too long ago

The most notable place I have seen linux was onboard an aircraft.

On Transatlantic flight, Virgin Airlines uses computer consoles on the back of every seat that allow you to play games, watch movies, send e-mail, watch the GPS location of the plane, etc. Northwest and Delta seem to use the same software.

Anyway, as we were preparing for landing in London, all the screens went black. I don't remember what I did, but I started mashing buttons trying to see if it would turn back on (I was playing a game, and I wasn't finished...), and I ended up the Linux "system is going down for system halt NOW!" screen, and somewhere on the screen it said it was running Debian. I assume that all the screens run off of a central computer, or at least a server and each seat has an embedded client computer, but it was, in fact, linux.

Belgacom, a belgian telecom operator, uses equipment from Alcatal-Lucent (formerly Alcatel-Bell), and their PBX's run Linux - I've actually seen it while looking over the shoulder of a technician who came to upgrade some software.
