Did somebody try to install Skype on newly installed Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop i386 ?
What has to be done before to avoid the dependency problem?
(I am completely new to Ubuntu. I installed it just a few ours ago.)

what file does it say is missing? I don't remember doing a great deal to install Skype.

You can normally install a dependancy by going into System > Administration > Synaptic Package manager and searching using the file name in there.

or google for Medibuntu and follow the instructions there to get Skype installed (plus video codecs and stuff if you need them)

This link will help you:

You should have skype up and running in a minute or 2.

If you don't know where to copy/paste the commands:

applications -> accessories -> terminal
