Open Source Social Bookmarking

I have put some effort into finding a good open source social bookmarking site. So far with no success. markaboo and several alternatives are all dead or with such small user bases that the term 'social' no longer truly applies.

So i am resorting to asking in here in the hope i might have missed something. If open source is not possible then which is the best of what remains? del.icio.us is popular and there are some others but it's hard to find info on how they work and what they do, they seem to expect you to sign up first.

That's what I usually use, although I haven't had time to maintain my account there lately. For me, it has just the right mix of "social," and makes it easy to abstain from participating in the social part of it if I so please (and I usually do). When I was using it actively (a few months ago), it certainly didn't seem dead or seem to have too small of a user base.
