amsn no sound

i am using Ubuntu 8.04 and my amsn does not produce any sound when my contact sends me a message

The "Play sounds when contacts sign in or send a message" is checked.

Pls help

Open the main window, choose Account > Preferences, and go to Others.

Then where it says
$play sound, change that to
$paplay sound

And see if that works :)
