With IRC channels, action doesn't happen on demand. You have to sit and wait for something to happen, otherwise you'll end up spamming the place trying to get a response and could be kicked out. You've got to sit there for a while, or just disconnect and come back later to see if anything is happening.

If there's nothing to talk about, how is there going to be talking?

I've spent quite a bit of time on #ubuntu--it's a fantastic channel. Probably asked for help once for each five time I've been able to be the hand holder.

Had trouble with a soundcard in January at my teen cousin's place--the IRC guys sorted me in five minutes with some personal /msg's.

Had no idea about #ubuntuforums, tbh. :p
