View Full Version : [xubuntu] Kernel Panic

I'm trying to install Xubuntu (7.10, currently downloading 8.04), but the LiveCD on boot merely goes

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (104,1)

As far as I can tell (fnx google) it most likely has something to do with initrd, but most end up solving them using the LiveCD, whereas this is coming from the LiveCD.

Can anyone help?

Stuff I found to get anyone started:

E: Sorry I haven't provided a whole amount of information, as it isn't my laptop. I'll try to get more specifics.

Brand, model, memory, graphics?

E System (make/brand), Intel Celeron M, 256mb memory. A designed for Windows XP sticker *cough*,

Xubuntu 8.04 loads, but very slowly (normal on 256mb memory I assume since it's bare minimum requirement).

Are you able to get to the Desktop?

Yes, but it's very very slow. I clicked the help button to see if it could run anything else. It froze or it was going to take a Hell of a long time to load (The thing sounds like someone who's 30 stone jogging up a steep hill).

I could install via text, but I'm not very confident with it. Guess I'll have to get my hands dirty.

Alternate Xubuntu CD is the way to go
