yes you heard that right,I am going to run sudo rm-rf (which you should never do, ever) because I broke my ubuntu install badly, and I cant be bothered fixing it. I will obviously back up my stuff first, (I have over 3 gigs of you tube videos, that I don't want to lose just to start with) I am going to film what happens, to show other people that it is a BAD IDEA. then I will reinstall, and not break it this time.

what do you think, do we need 1 more don't do this because aliens will eat your skin video on you tube?

(just so you know, sudo means super user do, giving you root privileges, its like saying I am god, now do what I say, rm means remove, as in delete permanently, r means recursive, so it will drill down through all your folders f means force, so even though it is a BAD idea, no warnings will be displayed, and it will just do it, and / means your file system, the whole thing, and all things containd within) this is gonna be fun!

People keep YouTube videos? I had no idea. Why?

to teach people what happens, and why it is a bad idea, the desktop backround survives, but if you do a search for rm-rf on youtube, you find a few.

No, wait. I mean, you said you have 3Gb of YouTube videos. Why do you save YouTube videos?

you've forgotten the 'lemming mentality'. others will see you do it and they'll want to do it too. you'll be the st. paul of rm-rf.

are you saying, that if someone is walking down the street, and they see someone else shoot themself, they will go, buy a gun, and shoot them self to see what it feels like? because they deserve to get shot.

So you save them ... so you can watch them offline?

yeah, or becaus I only have 5 gigs of downloads a month, and I dont want to spend it watching the same thing, when I can download it once, and then watch it whenever I want.

do you equate doing rm-rf to shooting oneself? if so, is there someone we could call for you? family member? local priest? trusted friend?

Okay, I guess that makes sense. I hadn't ever really thought about doing that before, but you make a good case for it.

lol, canny nice logic there: -
"if you shoot yourself, you should be shot"

I want to see this ridiculous video of yours, and, obviously, I'm going to copy you

sudo rm-rf, I'll have to remember that one, it reminds me of sectumsempra in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I used to do the same thing when I lived in south africa. We got only 3gb of down/upload a month and we had to save as much as we could.

Will try it now to confirm and post back in 3 minutes. When you remove a file, the information about that file is just removed from the filesystem index, the actual data from that file will just now be *somewhere* on the hard-drive, on the area that is now marked as empty.
If you really want to wipe clean a hard-drive, you dump the device-file full of zeroes/random data.

In case there was a misunderstanding, I was trying to make a lame joke.

Just did the 10 character command on gutsy in VB, and it's quite fun. :) Though probably not that fun if it ever happens to your host OS.

I tried it in an installation of Hardy in VB and said it couldn't delete /. I assume something has been added to stop you being able to wipe it with rm -rf? It could wipe other directories fine. 'sudo rm -rf /home/[name]/Documents worked fine. This was with the default account.
