creating kernel source tree on ubuntu

I am having Ubuntu 6.06 Draper Drake. I want to write a device driver on linux kernel version 2.6.24.2. I have downloaded the linux-2.6.24.2.tar.bz2 in /usr/src of ubuntu and untarred it. I wrote the driver code, but found that I need to configure the kernel tree first. Can anybody please tell how to configure the linux kernel source 2.6.24.2 tree on ubuntu draper drake.
