I am Going on a diet the day after memorial day. I need to loose a few (90) pounds. I just got my Weight Watchers stuff from ebay. Anyway I was wondering if there were any good weight tracking programs for ubuntu. I'm also hoping for something to track Exercise and Etc.

diets don't work.

you need to change your lifestyle or you'll gain all your weight back.

keeping it off is harder than loosing it.

i just lost 40 pounds and trying to keep it off is not easy.

also, losing so muh weight (90 pounds) will make your skin loose and hanging (then you might need surgery to remove that extra skin).

you should lose max 50 pounds and fill that skin with muscle mass.

weight is not the indicator for healthy. You can be big and still be healthy if you do the right exercises.

Also, you may want to read "good and bad carbs"

i am a stone and a half over-weight!! (21lbs) i wanted to start a thread or something with others to see if it helped to lose weight.

i saw a forum that has something you can put in your sig showing your current weight and your target weight on a scale system.

OK, I was going to start something like that too. I just happen to read LifeHacker daily and it just so happens they did a feature on fitness programs for your computer. Some are cross platform compatible, opensource, and for Linux.

Hope this helps.

i was looking for fitness videos on youtube the other day, i ended up watching them instead of doing anything active lol.

here's Yoga for Weight Loss with Tara Stiles :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2w-z5uZLFU

i'm not in to yoga other then watching it, but i did find some videos i like, maybe if you're too over-weight it might be too much?? -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgJtdZOBvc4

there are loads of other spartan 300 workout videos too!

do you think this is real? watch this at 02:24

looks like hard work though! i want to invent a workout machine that you plug in to the mains and it shocks your muscles in to a workout without you doing anything lol

i've got a skipping rope and i found some videos for that too!! i like this one, below, there are two schools of thought when it comes to skipping - you can do a fast, quick workout, or a slow workout that lasts longer, this video is a slow workout, personally i like to go a lot faster and get it over and done with!

here's some with Kim Strother :)

so far i have watched loads of videos and done exactly nothing!

lighting change and a tan helped that. still, he could have burned up a lot of fat, especially if he were cutting calories and used some kind of diuretic routine/drug.

i'm definately going to do it! i just did some skipping, but i got a bit of a headache!

i can't believe how lazy i've got, i went to a sport school where pros would come and train with us when they had a week off to get their fitness up, one time a professional tennis player had to be carried off the court because he couldn't keep up lol

i'm sitting here smoking a cigarette now lol.

Supplicate the diet with lifting and cardio. The last thing you want when loosing weight is a nutrient deficit and stimuli which slow your metabolism down.

in conclusion
LIFT HEAVY LIFT HARD
EAT CLEAN EAT RIGHT
RUN
REST SUFFICIENTLY
SLEEP

buy the wiifit :) it's working for me
that's only a temporary fix as your body will soon adapt and become dramatically more efficient at cardio.

the real solution is to -
buy the wii barbell and the wii squat rack.

as you get better you go to harder difficulty levels by increasing the rep range and the number of plates on the bar.

worked fo me, my arms went from ~7inches to around 14inches(I have a very small frame and incredibly low bodyfat, I've had random people walk up to me and say my arms are huge and in proportion to my body they are)

my waiste went from 30inches to 27 inches
my chest went form 37 inches to 42 inches
my thighs went from 18 inches to 23 inches

went from 100lbs to 150lbsin 3 years

again noone is attracted to a stick and you don't want to loose muscle you wan to loose fat. it's healthier and more attractive to have a little bit more fat on you and dramatically more muscle than to have little of each.

your goal should not be in pounds, it should be in inches(or CM if you're metric)

dead serious, whoa re the people who you think of when you think of incredibly muscular, low fat bodies? who is the first guy to come to mind? bodybuilders.
http://bodybuilding.com

take in information. learn. so so so much of it is relevant. just take it within the context of your goals. just know that you won't end up looking like a freak unless you're incredibly dedicated AND you're using steroids AND you have ungodly genetics so no worries on that matter. you might, however, end up looking like a Greek god.

i've got a skipping rope and i found some videos for that too!! i like this one,

Skipping would be great later on, but I wouldn't recommend it when you're first starting out. The more overweight you are the more your joints are going to dislike it. If you get injured it can be a setback for your motivation.

Also, while higher intensity exercise is the ultimate goal, it's better to start off gradually and build up, especially since you're a smoker. Get a health check (ie. blood tests, peak flow, waist:hip ratio etc.) with your GP when starting out, then you have some good measures to compare with down the track.

While I agree with you that some resistance training should be included, there's no reason to discourage cardiovascular activity, no matter what it is. Yes you'll become more efficient over time, but progressive overload applies to cardio as much as it applies to weights. Also, did you know that part of the efficiency increase is an improved ability to utilise fats for energy? ie. you burn fat more easily.

You know the drill when it comes to losing weight -- take in fewer calories, burn more calories. But you also know that most diets and quick weight-loss plans have about as much substance as a politician's campaign pledges. You're better off finding several simple things you can do on a daily basis -- along with following the cardinal rules of eating more vegetables and less fat and getting more physical activity. Together, they should send the scale numbers in the right direction.
