Currently I'm working on an upgraded Ubuntu install from gutsy to hardy. Overall the upgrade went okay (some minor issues).

The point is that I'm a XBMC (http://www.xbmc.org) user and I really like their linux port. However I'm no longer able to compile their sources. They have a list of all the required libs but for some reason it does not work on upgraded ubuntu versions. Fresh installations do work.

Since the required list of packages is quite large (a link to their readme (http://xbmc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/xbmc/branches/linuxport/XBMC/README.linux)) I'm not posting any compilation errors here unless requested.

I really want to know what the differences are between a fresh installation and an upgraded install. This would save me the trouble of reinstalling Ubuntu just to compile a piece of software!!

Thanks in advantage,
San
