Whenever I start GNOME, it seems as if everything's fine for the first few seconds, but then it just kinda gets stuck when trying to load the desktop and panels and all. I left it up for about fifteen minutes but even in that time, GNOME didn't load; the laptop kept making a bunch of noise, though.

The same thing happens in Openbox, too. I can't even open the menu with right-click before it freezes. :S Is anyone else having this problem?

Install envy, read on the envy site how to use it in textmode(and grafical).
The reboot to safe mode , use the last option(this will look at your video card and monitor), then reboot, install with envy the video drivers(or how you like to install).

Thanks; but GNOME still doesn't start after I installed the Envy ATI drivers, unless I boot into safe-mode.
