Meld ascii error

Hey everybody, I'm trying to use Meld to compare 2 files. When I attempt, I keep getting this error:

Could not read from '/home/xxx.xls'
It contains ascii nulls.
Perhaps it is a binary file.

How do I remove the ascii nulls from the OpenOffice Spreadsheet documents?

Meld is meant for plain text, not Spreadsheet files. Try outputting the spreadsheets to a text file to compare them?
