I've been using Opera (currently 9.27) for the last two years as my main browser, but use Firefox (3b5)for certain sites as well, as both browsers have cookies and javascript disabled, but for certain sites it's easier to allow cookies temporarily with Firefox than with Opera.

Swiftfox 3.0pre3. I love that SF is somehow slightly ahead of the curve with FF's actual releases. When everyone was on 3.0b4, SF was 3.0b5. Good stuff.

I don't get how there's this faction of Linux users that seems to think "graphics" are bad.

Careful, there are text browsers that do display images (or they can, its optional).

I use Lynx when I am using SSH, on a text only machine (my slackware box (see blog) has Opera, but wget and lynx are being used more), and when I have a need for using text only and when testing pages.

It isn't that graphics are bad, some of my best friends are graphical, but what is faster and more efficient. Also, you get used to it rapidly, and CLI becomes the most intuitive interface.

I'm wondering though, how much faster? I mean, my system's pretty snappy as is, I have no noticeable slowdowns or delays between clicking and things happening. Certainly not enough that'd make me want to give up the visual aspect of computing.

Well everyone here presumably uses Ubuntu on at least 1 machine, and Elinks has been available in Ubuntu since at least Edgy (when I first discovered it), so there's really no excuse ;) I don't have a problem with it. It's just that the only advantage of Lynx is the graphical browser. In which case Dillo is a better alternative anyways. In testing text-mode, I've always found Elinks to blow Lynx out of the water in terms of rendering AND features.

you're misunderstanding people. Just because someone uses a text browser doesn't mean they ONLY use a text browser. I use elinks when I'm logged into a server via ssh. It's easier than trying to foward x11 across the network. I also use it when I'm in the mood for wmii. Doesn't mean I don't also use Epiphany (which i'm using currently).

There are two sides. Faster as in processor time and faster as in faster to physically do things.

For browsing, a graphical browser like Opera with its mouse gestures and tabs is usually much more efficient than using lynx.

However, for text editing, install packages, programming, etc, the "intuitiveness" of hunting through menu's, clicking icons and constantly moving your hands away from the keyboard reduces productivity and is a distraction. I use wmii. I can do everything with only my keyboard much faster and without thinking than I ever could with GNOME/KDE/Xfce/etc.

That goes back to why I'm baffled when folks talk about scrapping graphical interfaces. I'm such a horrendous stickler for visual aesthetics that, no joke, one of the main reasons I couldn't force myself to use Audacious was that it didn't use my GTK theme and compiz effects didn't work on it. Opera's out for lack of GTK, and I use AWN as my dock because Cairo and Slim won't use my icon theme.

I won't try new icon themes or anything because changing one piece means I alter everything about my desktop appearance. I had to scrap dark themes because, since I use FF for the above reasons, I couldn't handle that my input boxes were dark on some sites. So it was back to a lighter theme.

Yes, I'm strange. But hey, Linux caters to me as well as you. :)

Wow. Amazing we use the same OS isn't it? I use wmii, Opera and the terminals. I use thunar when I don't use mc and vlc when I want to watch something. My theme for opera is the DOS theme and I keep everything black and white (no icons or panels or anything)

If I could reconcile my aesthetic issues, I'd love to work on putting one of the -boxes on my machine. I have Fluxbox installed and whenever I'm on a plane (such as today), I used it while watching DVDs because it kept my system usage down and saved battery life. I like stuff like that.

I'm thinking of reinstalling from the beginning with Xubuntu, since I think just installing XFCE from the repos doesn't really make a difference. Unless I should do "xubuntu-desktop", but I don't know if I want to do something that huge.

Put up a screen of your desktop, I'd honestly love to see what yours looks like. As I said, I'm fascinated by the tweakers that strip it all down, I'm just not one of 'em.

I'm all GNOME, Nautilus, Compiz, AWN, the works when it comes to visual effects, but in a clean way (no KDE). 2GB of memory and it's up to 18% usage just on startup before I actually run any applications (still get 5 hours of battery life!).

GUARANTEE if we were sitting next to each other doing whatever we do normally on our PCs, someone looking over our shoulders would never guess we ran the same OS.

Firefox 3b5

I think i did the poll ages ago.

I have used Firefox since v1.5 (or so) on Windows 2000
(I have never had an XP computer as I was given an old WinME and swapped that with a nicely done pirate of Win2k which I then in Jan2006 upgraded to Linspire, then to Ubuntu 5.10)

:)

I recently started using 64studio for recording instead of Hardy and it came with IceWeasel by default. At first I though, "what is this junk?" but it's really about the same as FireFox. The only thing that bothers me is that it thinks everything I type is a typo.

In Linux, Firefox, Konqueror and Opera in that order (I like Konkeror, but don't use KDE most of the time, so it has to load extra resources to run)

On my Mac side, Omniweb, Konqueror (under X11) Safari and Firefox(typically in X11) in that order.

See, I said I like Konqueror. :-)And thanks to Ubuntu, I discovered Konqueror! One could also say that Omni and Safari are also "konqueror-based" apps, so I sort of count them as Konqueror--at least, that's how I like to look at it. :-)

-Jon

(and I started using Firefox back when it was Phoenix or Firebird, too--but it's not may favorite)

I use Procomm Plus (First Addition) .. The one that cost like $89.00 brand new back in the late 80's, early 90's....

Aaahhh The good old days..... ATDT. I remember being on Compuserve on a Commodore 64 and actually having 80 character display by using a terminal emulator... Ahh the good old days of the parents yelling to get off the phone line and I remember many a nights staying up on the weekends when they went to bed to talk to my "hacker" friends online... It was so cool back then.

Ahhh the memories

Right now I am using Firefox 3.... I can't understand why anyone would want to use Konquerer though.....

After Firefox 3.0, it is really hard for me to use any other browser. I really like Firefox 3.0, and I have also been testing out Seamonkey 2 Alpha. It's pretty fast and has pretty nice looking theme (which isn't fininshed yet).

Firefox 3 (the Mozilla version from their site)(Ubuntuzilla) on 3 Gutsy machines and two Windows machines.
And PAID Opera 8.65 on my two PDA's (replacing a crippled MSOE that only worked in WEP text only and not HTML with links!)

yea we do know - it's firefox. :) :lolflag:

ff 3.0.1 for me, primarily. with some elinks, seamonkey, ff2, and dillo thrown in. and occasional w3m and wget, too, of course.

To me a the official definition of "personal computer" is "a thing that runs Firefox." I love it more than any single program and many members of my family. It freed me and made it be fun to be a nerd again.

But I must admit because of the biggest gaffe of the Mozilla corporation as of late (the refusal to really work towards a mobile browser), I also find myself using a lot of Safari on my iPhone. Best mobile browser.

Of course my best friend did give up his computer for a Wii plus an Opera browser (said it did everything he wanted on a PC), I have to say it has my respect as well...

Opera 9.51 - It is a bit unstable. G-mail and Pardus have this amazing ability to nuke all keyboard usage. But mouse gestures, Shift-Navigation, and the ability to mess with the address bar from the Keyboard (Press F2, a function lacking in Firefox: PM me if I am wrong about this) are attractive.

Icecat 2.0.0.12 - I use it as a "safe" browser of sorts. Because it does not support Flash in the first place, I disabled everything else. Java, Javascript, cookies. . . junk like that. It doesn't do much, and I could probably use Lynx for this job, but the logo is nice.

Firefox 3.0 - I have few qualms about it. I have not had any problems with it. My, "fully rigged" browser.
