View Full Version : [kubuntu] [SOLVED] DVI resolution wrong. Analog correct. :(

Hi,

I have a Samsung 245B 24" monitor. It supports 1920x1200 resolution and up until last week it worked correctly. However, I noticed my monitor was 'Plug and Play' in the settings and thought it would be better to switch to my actual monitor listing. The monitor has both DVI and analog inputs. The effect was that on digital output the desktop is now significantly larger than the actual screen and I have to scroll around it with the mouse. On analog mode, the resolution is correct.

I don't know how to fix this. (Yes - I've tried changing back to Plug and Play, widescreen and otherwise ;) ).

My xorg.conf file is as follows:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Thanks for any help. If it's relevant, I also have a Radeon 2600HD Pro graphics card, but I've tried that with both the Proprietary and Standard drivers and the problem is unaffected by any changes I've made to it so far.

didn't you made a back up of the xorg.conf file before you change something?
and how did you change it? manually editing xorg.conf ?

I honestly didn't expect to need to back up before editing the settings from the KDE control centre. I can't swear that my xorg.conf file is pristine, but I think the only change is from the adjustment in the KDE control centre. At any rate, I don't have a handy back up version to revert to. Sorry.

It seems that it defaults to a "best fit resolution" that may be different than your native resolution, but is listed in xorg.conf. You don't need all those modelines and modes for DVI, that were added by manual selection of monitor.

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Defaultdepth 24
EndSection

This may do in xorg.conf.

Thanks for that. Everything works again now. I think I need to learn how the xorg.conf file works in detail. It seems to be the source of half the problems on Linux.

Cheers,

H.
