WTF

You got something wrong. It's Ubuntu linux:lolflag:

And although you can install with a windows installer, it is a complete operating system, so you install it not on windows but on a separate hard drive partition if you want a dual-boot (=choose on startup) or on the hard drive as a whole if you do not want to keep windows, but that is not recommended since you will lose al your data. The installer that runs in windows automatically makes a dual-boot.

I will answer your questions in a moment.

1. There is an emulator called wine, http://www.winehq.org, which allows you to run a lot of windows programs and games under linux, although it can be a little cumbersome to get them to work though

2. Games: In addition to the ones working under wine (guild wars, world of warcraft, elder scrolls 4 oblivion, stalker, call of duty 1, 2 and 4, elder scrolls 3 morrowind, prey and a million more, there are tons of native linux games. A lot of them are free, but there are also lots of commercial games  http://www.tuxgames.com. Some free ones are savage 1, battle for wesnoth, nexuiz (really cool unreal tournament like game), openarena, tremulous, warsow, vegastrike, regnum online, and a ton more.

3. Offcourse they will be able to connect to your server, almost all games on the market have linux server binaries, and they are always compatible with windows clients, or linux clients if a linux game client exists for that perticular game.

That's pretty misleading. Wine does a good job but is very far from being able to run all windows apps. Especially games. You should look in the app database to see if the program you are trying to run will work.

Linux is about as much Windows as I am a politician.

As for compatible with Xp you would be surprised how much it is, with the Wubi installer. However, it is still a separate, completely free, non microsoft OS. It is not windows it doesn't try to be. Microsoft programs will not run (without some help) on a Linux OS. Even when they do run, it is rarely flawless.

With Wine, some may work, I know for sure Maple Story does not. If a game does work, you will likely be able to utilize the internet to play.

Windows Media Player: No and why in all the world would you want to. Amarok/Kaffine ftw.
Opera: Absolutely, install the linux client.
Firefox: Yes, Firefox is native on Linux.
Messengers: Pidgin supports all of those protocols with one application. (you can log in to all of them at once)
Torrent Apps: Yes, azureus installs native and utorrent runs in wine.

To use Windows programs: http://www.winehq.org/
To see if your game/program works: http://appdb.winehq.org/appbrowse.php

Ubuntu is an entirely different operating system. It is a Linux distribution. Windows is a product of Microsoft. Mac OS X is a product of Apple. Ubuntu is open source, but is a product of Canonical (very simplified here, there is more to it).

You can use a live cd which if you have the hardware for it to see what it is like without installing.

Opera has an Ubuntu version (I am using it now), Firefox comes with Ubuntu by default, Pidgin is compatible with MSN, AIM, and Yahoo (among others) for IM. VLC has a Linux version. The default torrent program is Transmission, but others are available as well.

1. Ubuntu is not Windows. It's a completely different OS based on Linux.

2. You may be able to get certain Windows games to work in a Windows compatibility layer called Wine.

4. Almost every Windows program has an equivalent Linux program. Some even have a native Linux version. Firefox, Opera, VLC, Azureous, all have native Linux versions available. For all your IM needs you can use Pidgin which is a multi-protocol IM client. There are literally tons of media players out there to choose from.

If you are looking for an MSN messenger look-alike, you may wan either aMSN (http://www.amsn-project.net/) or Emesene (http://www.emesene.org/). But Pidgin, which is installed on Ubuntu by default, is really good and handles a lot more protocols than MSN Messenger.

Like many others have said, Ubuntu Linux is not Microsoft Windows. It is an operating system but it not by Microsoft or it is fully Microsoft Windows compatible. To clean up some confusion, you might wanna read this article. http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

So, I would advice kakasensai not too expect too much compatibility between Windows XP and Ubuntu. The jump will be big but there are almost always reasonably good alternatives in Ubuntu/Linux if you are willing to learn. It is like driving a car and a motorcycle, very different way to drive/ride but should be able to bring you to your destination.

As many have stated, Ubuntu is not Windows.

I think you have totally misunderstood what Ubuntu is.

I strongly suspect that Ubuntu is not what you are looking for.

Nevertheless, there are benefits to Ubuntu over Windows. I think it would be best if you did a bit more reading about Ubuntu before attempting to install it.

Oh I see so Ubuntu is not Windows then ^^';. Well I am glad many of you have responded to my question. I see what I cant do and what I can't.

Well I shall read more before attempting to try Ubuntu, in rare case I see Ubuntu as a popular OS to many of you. ^^

Well thanks for the response.

I Guess i will stick with my XP for while :)
