It's that simple. In 8.04 I click the Shutdown button at the top, Gnome crashes. I press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and I get the Login Screen. Then from there I can shutdown. This started last night because I could click on the Shutdown button and Lock the screen earlier.

This happens to me occasionally. In one case I had the editor open and I was aksed if I wanted to save the files. Unfortunately, this was hidden behind another window. So nothing seemed to be happening and I clicked shutdown again. I couldn't shut down any applications even after I got rid of the editor dialog. The only thing that seemd to work was alt tabbing between applications.
And Alt backspace to shut down gnome. In fact, this resulted in a system shutdown.

Has your problem disappeared?

I don't use Ubuntu anymore so I would say yes.
