another newbie asking questions. hi.
i have and external drive (2.5 WD 250 GB) recently purchased. i want to install 8.04 part of it and use the rest with both my xp and ubuntu (which makes sense). i read and printed out some guides on how to install on a external and how to dual boot. yet i failed to do so.

my problem started with partitioning. i chose manual. gave about 8 gbs to / (ext3), 1 gb to swap, 3 gbs to /home (or /media/sdb) (ext3) rest to /windows (fat32).

i got my first warning by the program saying can't install -vfat or sth like that. so i left it unused and continued.

when i get to the last screen i changed the value (hd0) to (hd1). and my guide says that i should open terminal from applications>accessories>terminal and add several lines. but there's nothing that writes applications on the screen. so without any choice i press install and finish after installation and reboot i get error 17 inevitably.

i should know how to overcome fat32 problem and terminal problem. so, feel free to explain as i'm a second grader.

ps: i did a great deal of search in the forums. so please no links, unless you are pretty sure that's exactly what i seek.

GRUB error 17:

Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

From the Terminal: (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)

type this code in:

fdisk -l Small L

Paste the results here.

It seems that the problem lies with the windows FAT32 partition.

news news!

i managed to install it but i'm too afraid to restart because i still couldn't handle necessary configurations.

since i use live cd system does not accept chroot /mnt/ubuntu command.

bt my fdisk
