Lost the capability to change the desktop. It seems like the desktop had a snafu. The tray is on the bottom out of site. When I try to upgrade there is not a, password to complete the upgrade question box?

Is your monitor set up correctly? You need to find the horizontal and vertical sync setting plus the supported resolutions for your monitor and video card. Guides for doing that are here (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=334)
or you can post your specs here.
You should be able to move the out of sight panel by holding down the mouse button and dragging the panel to another location (like the left or right side).
The question about su is perplexing, or not clear to me. Ubuntu uses sudo for administrative privileges not su.

I cannot do administrative functions because it doesn't ask for the administrative password. I can't change the screen settings due to the su or administrative problem. I didn't change any sttings and it started when I tried to do some of the updates?
