Hi

I am very new to linux and this is my first time trying to install it in a server (windows man up to now)

i have downloaded the ISO image from the site used all the programs it says to make the disks and up them in to a PC (500Mhz P3 128Mb Ram) and it will not boot

there is a copy of windows 2000 server on the box at the moment but i want to get rid and put Ubuntu on but i can't get the PC to boot from the disk

Any one any idea how to get it to work

How did you burnt the CD ? it should be as described here :https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto)
and burn it at slow speed as 2x - 4x

I used the page you are suggesting and followed the instructions to the letter i have a perfect disk as far as i can tell just wont boot from it

i know this is a DOS thing but what are the IO.sys and command.com file names in Linux as i know a dos boot requires these files this system needs What?

As i said i am new to all of this

Did you changed the Bios to boot from the CD as a first option ?

As you have said, these files are dos-specific. Don't search for them in the distro!
I wonder, whether the computer is CD-bootable at all. Have you ever booted from any cd on the machine?
If it is CD-bootable, describe, at which stage the booting fails: post the text, that appears on the screen.

If you are positive that your machine will not boot from a CD, then my suggestion would be to find a bit better machine. I think you are going to find that trying to use a machine that you can not boot to a CD is going to be quite a challenge over time.

But good luck.

they are work arounds to chose from.https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation#head-ca8e337bdfab6bfa1d064371898775fe1e9e22fd

maybe the simplest, make your self a floppy that will boot the CD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManager
