Good, my question is due to the following. My girlfriend has a PC with Windows XP and it work but very slow (very slow). I told her that Im going to install Xubuntu and it going to work well (thought that if xp works, Xubuntu would work to perfection). However, when I went to see the requirements for Xubuntu, say they are 256 mb.
On the other hand I have seen here that managed to ride a decent way ubuntu hardy in a computer with 64 MB RAM.
Does anyone know if I can install that pc Xubuntu? And Ubuntu?
To cap it all she always complains about my computer, so I want to install something that can handle very easily, as far as possible you never have to go to console or repositories, or anything like that.
(Sorry for my english)
Thank you for everything

should work, install it using the alternate install though, it requires much less ram... i think it says 128 for alternate, but it should work.

as for the other, i'm not sure how you can avoid ever using the repositories

I, too, am at a loss as to how to not access the repositories.

On subject computer, have you thought about Fluxbuntu? Lighter than Xubuntu, may give better performance.

just get her more ram, anything you put on it will be slow if not slower than xp with that amount of ram. don't bother trying to convert her if she's not willing to learn linux.

I am not saying she never has to enter to the repositories, I only saying that she isn't going to be continually setting up the computer.
Do you believe that it will not be able to use Linux? she should stay with xp?

I guess that machine would be better with Fluxbuntu (http://fluxbuntu.org/) or Icebuntu (http://freshmeat.net/projects/icebuntu/). They need fewer resources than Xubuntu.

So, do you think she should stay with xp or try installing some of that's distros?

Depends on what she uses her computer for. If you are going to install one of these *buntu's then you should help her get used everything she does on her PC now. You can find lightweight alternatives of most of the applications.

She tends to use Excel, Word, messenger and music. Maybe some opportunity the paint. I doubt that she uses something else.

remember you could always just let her dual-boot xp/(some lite distro), then if she gets used to it, wipe xp for some free room.

the fun part is you can just try all of the linux distros till you find one you like

edit: Open office is most likely what she will use to replace Excel and Word, just make sure Open Office will do everything she wants

Abiword (http://www.abisource.com/) for a word processor and Gnumeric (http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/) for spreadsheets; Audicious (http://audicious.newgrounds.com/), Mpd + Sonata (http://sonata.berlios.de/), Quod Libet (http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet) for music player and emesene (http://www.emesene.org/) for WLM client would be enough and light. You can find all of them in the repositories so that shouldn't be a problem. I don't suggest Xubuntu because to use Xubuntu you should have 256mb of ram. Icebuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DerivativeTeam/Derivatives/IceBuntu) is supposed to be able to run on 64mb ram machines so it's possibily the way to go. Maybe first dual boot then if she's happy you can wipe out the Windows partition.

yes, i think she should stay with xp, in linux those are heavy programs and the light alternatives can't compare in compatibility. i've been where your at, save yourself the pain get more ram.

go with what she wants, not what you want.

i work with 450mhz 256mb ram everyday and trust me my build is as light as it can get, with 110mb ram your going to pull your hair out trying to gain every inch of speed you can and then some.

Ok, I just try to help her, but last thing I want is make it work worse.
Anyway really thanks for your help.
