Is there any way to get Ubuntu to rescan the hard disk, looking at what partitions/operating systems are there, and then both rebuild the GRUB menu and write it to disk?

Or do I have to create a new menu.lst by hand?

The reason I ask is that I've installed Windows on a computer that formerly had just Ubuntu on it, so that they now dual-boot. I need grub to take notice of the new Windows partition so I can boot it.

I believe your answer can be found here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows?action=show&redirect=RestoreGrub).
