Limit panel width?

I want to limit the width of my bottom panel so that a bit on the desktop will be visible on each side.

The closest I've gotten to accomplish this is by disabling the expand option for the panel but then it changes size according to how much space is needed.

I'd like to set it to either a percentage of the screen width or specify a width in pixels. Sounds simple enough but I've not been able to find any clues by googling or searching here.

This is slightly off topic, but I've never noticed the expand option, even though I edit the panel's options every time I install Ubuntu on a system :p

But other than that I can't see or think of any other way of changing the panel width :(
