Me and a friend had a discussion the other day about various measurement.

Were curious about converting 100 mL (millimeters) of 40% vodka to grams. I know one is based on volume/density/weight and the other is just weight, or something like that.

I can't find a general estimate of vodka's volume and a good equation to convert it all. I highly appreciate any help for this very odd request.

40% vodka is around 0.92g/ml

mass = density * volume

if density is roughly ~ 1, like water, then

mass (gramms) = 1(g/ml) * 100 (ml) = 100 gramms

EDIT: obviously, there are people who just know the density of vodka. A disturbing thought.

Take a bottle of vodka, put in on scales. Drink the bottle of vodka and put in on the scales again. Subtracts and divide and you have your answer.

Or the answer without the added benefits of being drunk:
Say vodka is 40% ethanol (0.789 g/mL) and 60% water (0.9970 g/mL) then the density of the vodka would be 0.914 g/mL. Thus 100 mL is about 91 grams.

First, what does 40% mean? Does it mean 40% of the total volume?

Then, you have 40 mL of alcohol, and assuming everything else is water, and some other stuff negligible, then you got 60 mL water.

alcohol (ethanol) is 0.789 g/mL, and water is 1 g/mL.

Multiply alcohol's density with the volume. So 40 mL * 0.789 g/mL = 31.56 g.

Multiply water's density with volume. 60 mL * 1 g/mL = 60 g

add 31.56 g + 60 g = 91.56

A general formula would be
Given:
ratio/percentage of alcohol to water
total volume of the vodka

Constants:
water's density
alcohol's density

solution:
[((alcohol's percentage)*(total volume of vodka))*(alcohol's density)]+[((water's percentage)*(total volume of vodka))*(water's density)]

EQUALS whatever weight you come up with...

It's quite easy actually
