Hello Ubuntu fans

I've been working on my personal online portfolio in an attempt to gain employment after finishing university and part of the site is dedicated to showcasing my xhtml / CSS design skills. As a personal project I created a propaganda web site for Ubuntu:

http://theaccused.co.uk/sites/ubuntu/

The site isn't intended for the general public but I would like your feedback whether such a site is a good idea?

I realise that Linux / Ubuntu isn't competing with Windows or any other OS, it just wants to be the best OS it can. However, I can't see the harm in some positive PR in the form of avocation sites. It worked for Firefox with their spreadfirefox.com site.

So what do you think? Should Ubuntu be pushed to the public more and is avocational [sic] websites the best way? What about viral marketing, or publicity stunts? Or will those antics only damage the Ubuntu image?

Looks very good! I think you should contact someone from the marketing team (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam), I remember a recent post asking for help with http://www.spreadubuntu.org I think your design would be a great start... :KS

Look very good. IMHO it looks better than the current spreadubuntu website. It reminds me a bit of the Mozilla.org site, with the rounded boxed and three columns.

Thanks for the kind comments. I didn't realise there was a http://www.spreadubuntu.org/ , I guess that says something about the Ubuntu marketing.

It does look like the mozilla site doesn't it. I didn't intentionaly base the design on that site but the three column structure is popular for displaying a lot of information in chunk size pieces. As for the rounded boxes, they are there because I was experimenting with new CSS techniques. As I mentioned in the first post, the intention for the site is to showcase design skills.

Ubuntu - Spread it.

Is that really the kind of marketing we would want?

I must say I prefer flaming_monkeys variant. :)

Wow.

First of all, I never knew there was a spreadubuntu.org site. I don't know who runs it, but it's not easy on the eyes. Dare I say it looks ugly. Too... much... brown...

flaming, although your site definitely reminds one of the firefox site, that's a good thing. Yours is definitely better than spreadubuntu, just on aesthetics alone.

Publicity stunts are probably not the best thing for Ubuntu; I think a lot of people would think "Ach, that's just a rich boy [Shuttleworth] showing off his pet project." but I do think a well-designed (I dislike spreadubuntu.org's layout and color scheme) website would definitely be a good thing for Ubuntu.

I like the site! Very well done.

Let's see if students/readers/members will take all 200 CDs. Wouldn't be bad outcome of this action, don't you think ? Server is also running on Ubuntu.

The page is pretty good , simple , eyecandy , and intuitive.

A little PR is something that in my opinion FOSS needs to gain market share , and once we got a good one , there will be no activex , direct3d , etc.. in the world that can stop us from freely choice the software that we prefer:cool: .
