Well I just ran the live cd.

I downloaded ubuntu.

I went to system > admin > partition editor

and I went and made a partition of 40 gb.

I clicked apply and now I have 40 gigs of unallocated space.

Now I clicked install and it's trying to use the entire disk... how can I select the partion I made.

I'm scared because I want to keep vista and I hope I didn't screw up my computer :(

Someone please help!

When the installation comes to where to install, at that time do "Select Manual Configuration".
And then allocate mount point as "/" to the 40 GB space. also a swap space.

If your partitions show only 1 partition of 40GB, and no other space (I mean if your hard disk size is 40GB) then possibly you lost vista !!

Reboot and see if there is Vista and be careful the next time.

Check this step by step guide - http://news.softpedia.com/news/Installing-Ubuntu-8-04-LTS-84314.shtml

Wish you the best , i am sure there is no reason to worry ! lets hope for the best.

I'm so scared right now... I need someone to tell me how!

I already made a partition though I just want to know hwo to select it.

I have 40 GB of unallocated space I want to use that.

I already have about 170 GB for Vista.

we could tell you how, in a very brief way, then you would go and try it, and in the process possibly destroy your vista partition.

please read through the link supplied so you can hopefully do it without destroying your vista partition.

good luck, and remember backups are your friends!
