box 1: old 750mhz duron, 330 mbram, 40gb hdd
box 2: elitegroup notebook, 1.8ghz, 256mb ram, 30 gb hdd (still struggling with stable adsl-lan and automount of digital camera on this box)

My Ubuntu box is a do-it-yourselfer with:
ECS K7S5A motherboard
AMD AthlonXP 1600+ 1.4GHz overclocked to ~1.6GHz
512MB DDR-RAM
80GB Western Digital hard drive for OSs
60GB IBM hard drive for storage
ATI Radeon 9800 that thankfully was easy to get working in Ubuntu

My Yoper box is an ancient IBM ThinkPad 390X with:
Pentium III 500MHz
192MB SDRAM
12GB hard disk

I use Firefox exclusively on any OS it can run on. In the event I am forced to use a computer lab machine without it, I just bring it with me (http://www.collegechixors.com/index.php?p=63).

Just a quick bit of info... did you know that everytime Apple sells a computer, Mr. Bill Gates makes more profit on the sale of that computer than Apple itself? This is due to Billy Boy's investments in Apple!

Microsoft did own non-voting stock in apple but afaik apple bought all that stock back / microsoft no longer owns it. I'm not 100% sure though so i'll have to do some research later :)

I'm quite happy with the performance of this box
"Main Computer"
----------------------------
Ubuntu OS amd64 version
Athlon64 3000+
e-GeForce FX 5700LE 256MB DDR
512 MB DDR3200 soon to be doubled
DVD+RW
40gig Serial ATA disk soon to be doubled and put in a raid :-D
hauppauge TV tuner

Now this is partly my old compy and partly junk parts to compensate for what I had to move to my new box.
"Hobby OS Computer"
--------------------------------------
Syllable, SkyOS5_betas, Windows, BeOS, Others....
AthlonXP 2400+
GeForce4 440MX 64MB DDR
256 MB DDR speed unknown
CD-ROM
2 (very flaky) 80gig Ultra ATA Disks

I have both of them hooked up to a single set of peripherals
------------------------------------
15 lcd display
GE keyboard + 5 Button mouse
Generic Speakers
Modded XBox controler :-D (the nice, big meaty one!)

My pc I built a while ago...

Soyo SY-7VCA Motherboard
933 mhz Intel Pent. 3 (Overclocked to 1130)
Chaintech Geforce MX 440 (Overclocked also)
384 megs SD-RAM
Western Digital 20 gig Hardrive

With Ubuntu only. Used to Dual boot with Win 2k. But don't need to because of Ubuntu.

I remember when this pc was top of the line... I would build another one but it gets everything done and runs good.

Mine...

Main PC
-----------
Custom ABS computer (from 2001, when they were more customizeable) I would recommend the company to anyone that's lazy (like me) and doesn't feel like building their own.
AMD XP 2000+ (1900+ OC'd)
1 gig ddr 2100
60 gig (/dev/hdb) Ubuntu (I used to swear by FC1, then I found debian)
8 Gig (/dev/hda) Win XP pro (i never use it, so i'm plaining to wipe it.)
GeForce 4800se (soon to get 6800) cause i'm a gamer.
Audigy
Dvd, cdrw

Second PC (loaned to someone at the moment)
Also, built from parts from various dumpsters in the area. I'm telling you, dumpsters are a geek's wet dream. :-P
---------------------------------------------
233MMX
96 MB ram (sdram... beats the 72pin crap)
TNT2, 2.5 gig hd, NORMALLY debian or gentoo (mainly with gnome and for dhcp, server, experimental usages) but at the moment win98 cause they didn't want to use linux.... sigh.

She'd rather have me home in my home office playing with computers than not home and playing with another women. Then my room mates have pcs as well, I think Shane has 3 boxes in his room. Bryan has 1 box which is pretty old that I threw debian with Xface on cause he just uses it for multimedia music and surfing the web.

I think next the the govt holds an auction here I am going to try and make i and buy a few older used pcs and start my cluster :). I want to build a cluster of 4 or 5 debian boxes just to learn. I all ready have a gigabyte 8 port switch that would work well for the back bone for the cluster, but we will have to see how that will work out.

I just hope the boxes go chap cause I just spent a lot of cash getting my car fixed. All most spent $800 getting my car back running. Head gasket, starter, idle pulley, sypertaine belt, battery and all so a new thermostat. So the cluster will have to be built one box at a time.

Well, though this has a bit of "my computer is bigger than yours":

New computer:

Shuttle SN85G4
Athlon 64 2800+
160 GB Samsung HD
Nec 8x DL-DVD-RW
Sapphire Radeon 9600 (<- not supported by latest ATI-driver *grmpf*)
1 GB RAM
Running Ubuntu Warty most of the time (Windows for gaming)

Old PC:
Pentium III 650@780
Geforce 3 Ti 200
640 MB RAM
40 GB IBM HD
24x Teac CD-RW
2x Toshiba DVD
SB Live 5.1

Running windows at the moment, used to play Age of Mythology from time to time, will be recycled as a file and webserver when I have time

Notebook:
Acer Travelmate 525
PIII mobile 700
10 GB HD
ATI Rage Mobility
24x CD-Rom

This was my first computer with Ubuntu on it. Basically it spreaded like a virus from there ;)

I have to admit that in all the years I have been involved in computers and computer science I never really felt urged to have more than one computer. I actually keep my older computer and my laptop only because it is no longer reasonable to sell them.

32MB nvidia card not sure, boot message goes by too fast

System 3... waiting for Ubuntu hoary official release... got Mandrake 9.2 on it currently (it's a server, I can't risk messing it up yet):

1.4GHz P4
128MB ram... rambus of all things... expensive to upgrade
Intel mobo
32MB nvidia card

System 4... again waiting for official Hoary:
1.5GHz celeron
384MB ram
SIS graphics... absolutely no 3D support at all and X has to use framebuffer...

(Don't ever buy a laptop with SIS graphics on it for use with Linux if you want to do 3D work on it...)

Printer HP psc 1350 (not used it yet, got it today)
Maxtor external 160GB USB hard disc... works great... but must get a USB2 or firewire card to use it with... USB1 speeds suck...

Heh. I've got a P3 933 Mhz with an old Xbox hard drive in it. I don't know how I ever lived without a modded Xbox. I'm assuming that's where yours came from.

I just got an upgraded mobo/cpu/ram/psu set :)

(so I gotsta brag, before something 15x better comes out next week!)

model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
stepping : 3
cpu MHz : 3842.085
cache size : 1024 KB
(I had it up to 4GHz for a while, but it wasn't quite stable )
MSI Neo2 FISR mobo
2x256MB OCZ DDR550
OCZ Powerstream 520 Watt PSU

and to top off this fun gear, I have a 3 year old video card
Nvidia Ti4600

So now you ask, do I ever put it to good use? Well, sort of--I do some video editing (which I must admit, I boot to windows for), some media conversion, some gaming, quite a bit of content creation, and a lot of every day using.

Anyways, glad to get my week of bragging time in, because I won't be able to brag for a few more years ;)

bought from CyberPower.inc --wouldn't buy from them again as I had to fight for 2 months over a defective wireless card. I even had to contact the better business bureau and file a complaint!

bought it at Best Buy and glad I did. I originally bought an eMachines with an Athelon 64 that had a problem with random rebooting regardless of the OS installed. Returned it within the first 14 days after thinking all that time that I could fix it and failing. They asked me no questions, took it back and let me exchange it for the HP. Wow.

Real nice and Linux compatible hardware, although I have to say I didn't initially build this system with Linux in mind. Makes for a powerfull and quiet setup (the CPU is fitted with a 80x80 mm low-rpm fan and the videocard is fitted with Zalman's huge heatsink to minimize noise). I initially thought I'd sell this system and buy a Mac when I got fed up with Windows, but then I tried Ubuntu and now I'm happy with it again. ;)

I just built this system and overclocked it a month ago and I must say it rocks. I can now play just about any game out on the market at a decent frame rate. I dual boot Win Xp Pro SP2 and Kubuntu 5.10. Windows loads up in a flash on it but Kubuntu still takes a little time. I may try switching back to Ubuntu and see if it loads any faster than Kubuntu.

BTW, I am going to buy another 80 gig HD and set up raid on it in about a week or so. I will have to find out if Ubuntu supports raid or not before deciding to install it.

EDIT: I tell a lie, I'm still using the original 17" Iiyama CRT and Yamaha speakers.

One day I shall have a dual-core Athlon monster, but I don't really need it. I don't play many games, but have been getting back into the original Doom and the kids play Tuxracer. When I do some video editing the extra power would help with the rendering.

For the record:

I have Ubuntu 5.10 installed and functioning on a Toshiba M65-S9065. I tried Ubuntu 4.10 with no luck, the install could not see my hard drive. I also tried to install Fedora Core 4 with no luck as X would not load and FC just hangs to the point that I need to do a hard reboot. Solaris 10 x86 did not do any better and just to see I tried RHEL4.0. Still no X, but I had a working system if I wanted my laptop to be a server. Anyways, I downloaded Ubuntu 5.10 and it works great. I have officially replaced my old HP laptop running windowz with a nice new Toshiba, 1.7Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, CDRW/DVDRW, 17 inch wide screen 1400x900 display with wireless support running Breezy Badger!

It literally took all night to get everything to work, however, it works. Here are a few words of advise.

- do not worry about wireless configuration at bootup, it will not work.
- install using the onboard NIC and after the system automatically updates go to system->admin->Networking and configure your wireless interface. Deactivate the eth0 device and reboot.

- when setting up X ctrl-alt-backspace is your friend, use it to go back to the command line when the screen does not load.

Follow these steps as user root in the same order to setup X:
- get and run a program called 915resolution (search google for examples)
- run the following command to reconfigure your X system:
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
- I used the Frame Buffer device (i'm not gaming and I don't plan on watching dvd's so this should be fine for me)

(update: I just watched the last samurai, only problem is the sound goes away when I do full screen, however, Ogle allows for maximize window to the entire screen minus the top and bottom icon/tool bars)

- run the command 'startx'

To have X start at system boot, simply echo the 915resolution command with the full path into the following file /etc/init.d/res-fix

here is my configuration:
# echo "/full/path/to/915resolution 3c 1400 900" > /etc/init.d/res-fix

Change permissions for execute:
# chmod u+x /etc/init.d/res-fix

Link the program to all of your rc directories, before gdm starts
# for scriptdir in 1 2 3 4 5 6; do ln -s /etc/init.d/res-fix /etc/rc.$scriptdir.d/S12res-fix;done

(at this point I do not know of a different way to enable a service in ubuntu)

Test it by rebooting, and use caution with the hibernate functionality. If all else fails, get back to a command line and do a fresh reboot.

For those that are interested here is my xorg.conf:

I thought about 64 bit, but decided it was still too early in its life to be of any use, also many are having problems with 64bit, still not mature enough I reckon.

This mobo has 4 slots dual channel, so 4x1 gig sticks :)

Both my machines are currently being rebuilt (Fresh new installs), But ther purpose will still be the same :)

Fileserver/Gateway
Pentium 3 - 550
A-Open Ax6b-Plus
640Mb Ram
40Gb Harddrive (all system stuff)
200Gb Harddrive (file server side)
48x24x48 CD-RW

10/100/1000Mb NIC (Local Access)
56k ISA Dialup Modem (fear the power! Blame bad telco for adsl avaliblity)

MythTV Box
Pentium 3 - 667
512Mb Ram
80Gb Harddrive (Will buy a 200gig if the mythtv box works successfully)
Sony DVD Rom
10/100Mb NIC

Yeah, I know MythTV should have a better box, But I'm just playing for the moment. If I can get it to work, than I'll get some better hardware. At the moment, I'm just using bits and peices of the mrs's computer, as now i finally got her a Pentium 4.

My PC
Penium 4 - 2.4Ghz 533FSB
VIA P4X400
1.5Gb Ram DDR400
40Gb Harddrive (Windows XP)
80Gb Harddrive (Ubuntu, take out the ide cable from XP to use this)

Almost an Ubuntu Home. I'm considering putting it on my work PC now (If I didnt have an iBook with Mac OS X 10.4 on it. No ubuntu on it yet, only just brought it)

Also, my two floor models run Ubuntu (I only install Windows upon request) -- all of my refurbs run either Ubuntu or Gentoo (depends on age and how much power I need to squeeze out of them) and new systems come w/ Ubuntu by default. And one of my gaming servers runs Gentoo (2.7 GHz P4, 4 GB Ram, 120 GB SATA, some crappy old GeForce card (Geforce 2, I think).

How'd you partition your SATA drive? I tried the normal way (defrag, pop in a live CD of Mepis -> QtParted), but I just...couldn't...

The floor rigs were all initially formatted and partitioned during the XP install. On dual-boots, I generally prefer to install my Windows partition(s) first.

Are you trying to resize a partition, or simply setup a new disk?

If it's the latter, is your mobo SATA happy?

I just handed my old X21 over to my wife when I upgraded. I migrated to this NC4200 on the recomendation of a friend (his company just retired all of their Thinkpads and moved to this model HP), and it's a well designed, sturdy little box. sad to say, they dont' make athlon 64 2500+s, they do make 3500+s though.
for motherboards, look into this one made by MSI, it has an ATi x200 integrated into it(eugh ATi drivers, good for windows though) and a PCI-e slot.

as for my current setup:

Athlon 64 3000+
512mb DDR400 ram(soon to be 1.5gigs)
ATi Radeon 9250 128mb GFX card
80gig HDD(windows, storage, swap)
160Gig HDD(linux, pagefiling, storage)

it's a decent setup, I keep all my windows games on my linux HDD and vice versa. nice stable etc. built it myself. Was on a budget though so I could pretty much only get the cheapest parts on sale, the two HDDs just kind of happened(I thought one was dead but was wrong)

[...] fx5200 128mb/64 bits ( ya.. its crap i know ) [...]

The one and only computer I owned about this time last year I'd had for over 5 years. The video card was an nVidia TNT2 w/16(!) MB of RAM.

If your card is "crap" then what was mine? ;-)

i bought this in 1999 and to this day i haven't ever had a single hardware problem with it.
i just repalced my 10GB Maxtor HDD with a 60GB because it was getting over crowded...also i replaced my RAM chips but only because the 64MB RAM it came with wasn't enough.

Had xp on it.

Bought a Acer Aspire 5050 a couple of months back.

Hitachi 80 gig hd.
Pioneer cd/dvd burner.
ATI x1100 graphics.
Had Vista on it. Didn't like it so put on Feisty as a

Also took xp off the Tosh. and put on Feisty as well.

I have an extra 60 GB hard drive already mounted in a drive caddy which I have UBUNTU Breezy Badger 5.10 installed. Sort of a dual boot setup. To boot Ubuntu all I have to do is remove my Windows drive and install my Linux one. (two phillips screws)
Ubuntu seems to work well with my hardware even my external soundcard.
This is a three year old machine.
Will be buying a new one soon.
Maybe an Alienware Area 51 m5500?

Intel Pentium 233 MHz MMX CPU
128 Mb (60 ns) RAM
Dual 6 GB hard-drives (Quantum Bigfoot, Western Digital Caviar)

NE2000 compatible 10 Mbps ethernet card
1.44 Mb & 1.2 Mb Floppy disk drives
Hyundai DeluxScan 15G monitor

Wait till you see the framerates on this thing! :D
This system was put together mainly for nostalgy. The operating system in it is Windows 95. I have a fair collection of purchased old games that fail to run under WINE or Dosbox properly.

I was tempted to try Linux on it but Gnome running off the Breezy live disc took ages to start. Also video and sound support are propably obsolete for this kind of hardware.
