This is my seccond thread about what appears to be a continuously changing problem (or just a whole host of problems).
I orriginaly posted about browsing death (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=796430&highlight=browsing+death)
when firefox was experiencing some isues wherby it could not connect to web pages unless i typed in an ip adress instead of a web adress.
This was fixed by turning off ipv6 in firefox which is now working perfectly.
i then tried to update sympatic, which took some time so i decided to cancel.
i asked if there was any way of turning off ipv6 for entire computer and was refered to this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=87798&page=14
I followed both of the methods decribed in posts 131 and 133.
i then tried to up date again, leaving it for about an hour.
it failed (i think) and returned this:

ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update

Has anyone seen something like this before?

No. But the (1.0.0.0) puzzles me. Can you try the command
ping us.archive.ubuntu.com
and see what address it says it is pinging? It looks as though perhaps DNS is returning an address of 1.0.0.0 for that name, which I don't believe to be correct. Don't worry if the ping succeeds or not. Just make sure the IP address resolves OK.

step one: disable ipv6 according to the following link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WebBrowsingSlowIPv6IPv4?

step two: you'll probably experince much better browsing if you use openDNS servers according to this link:
https://www.opendns.com/start?device=ubuntu

i suspect you're having problems steming from a flaky router. the above two fixes should help you to get around even if the router's dns and ip stack is flaky.
