I came upon this when looking for something similar to screen (via Wikipedia).
http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/
I think I could make use of it on my old computers, but by the looks of it and the tutorial it's a nightmare (to me at least) to get running.
Does anyone have any experience with this at all?

Sorry, misread it.

It seems easy to setup. It is in the repos.

sudo aptitude install twin

It's more or less like (or tries to be) X.
It's a program, and mc and stuff are run from the built in terminal emulator.
There are apps that he made a frontend for to it (namely kcalc and xmms), but I'd use it to not bother with all the dumb stuff involving X.
EDIT: I'm not fast enough.
I'm not so worried about the repos part, it's the part involving modules and drivers and such.

I found that out. Install from the repository.

(I had trouble building it from that site and didn't care enough to really find out I needed. I know now though)

It works fine. I am using it in a virtual terminal (where the mouse won't work) but it is painless to get working.

Ok, nice to know.
I'll have to investigate getting it to work on BasicLinux or muLinux, because that's where I'll need it.

You can compile it from source. The readme has all you need.

Lazy question; how large was the .tar.gz?
