Dual Monitors won't stay "uncloned"

I cannot get the "cloned" option to stay turned off so I have two separate desktops to work with, e.g. - working on one, movie on the other. My main monitor is a Dell laptop Inspiron e1505. The extended monitor is an ACER. (BTW, this did work in Xandros; I don't know if that is a dirty word here).
I suppose I need to load the Linux drivers for the system then go from there?

This is what worked for me to create an extended desktop.

After adding the virtual size to xorg.conf the desktop stayed uncloned.
