True, that doesn't mean 100 million people downlaoded the thing. Many people downloaded it at least 7 to 10 times it you count firefox 0.10 , 1.0 , 1.0.1 , 1.0.2 ... 1.0.7
It is a bit misleading.

So was I. But that counter is increasing at a crazy rate.

It is a bit misleading.

Automatic updates (and downloads using Firefox) are not counted.

Also, the counter is "fake" as it simply request a download rate sampled over a given interval and then extrapolates it to a fixed download rate, which it displays in the browser. It's probably roughly accurate (as I'm sure the sample rates are updated and requested by your browser periodically) but it's still only an estimate :)
