With Omar as Homer, and Badr substituted for Bart, The Simpsons is now playing on Arab television. But in order not to risk offending an Arab audience, the characters in Al Shamshoon, as the show is now called, have modified some of their most distinguishable traits.

Does this mean that Apu will get named Al or Hank or something?

Very interesting. I am planning to move back to Morocco in March so I will be searching for "Al Shamshoon" in Arabic when I get there. (I do speak/understand Arabic to some degree.) It's one of my favorite shows in English, but so much of the humor is tied to American culture I have never been able to understand how it has done so well translated into French/Spanish/etc. Arab culture is very different--I love the humor they have, but it doesn't translate well to English for an american audience so I will be interested to see if/how well the Simpsons do in translation...I am guessing there will be a LOT of modification going on.

Thanks for this update! This is right up my alley--I'm preparing to write a book on Arabic humor and how it reveals culture, specifically in the nation of Morocco and this event, while going in the reverse direction, fascinates me.
