I've found out that hinting spoils appearance of small text and italic cyrillic letters (they "jump"). So I want to change font hinting for some fonts/sizes/styles. Writing a customized .fonts.conf is not a problem.
The problem is that GNOME and GTK-apps are ignoring font configuration. Is there a way to make GNOME respect fontconfig settings?
