[SOLVED] Can't install on old Dell C610

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 on an old Dell C610 which currently is running XP. The laptop has 256M of RAM. When I run from the LiveCD, it says that I need at least 256M to run the installer. I tried using the alternate ISO image but my machine fails to boot from that CD. Any ideas on how to get Linux installed? I want to overwrite Windows.

With that RAM; try Xubuntu Alternate CD. You cannot boot a Live CD with that RAM, unless you make a 500 MB /swap partition ahead of time. For that you can use Gparted Live CD:

As mentioned in my original post, the Alternate CD seems to be ignored on boot.

You can still use Gparted and boot your Live CD.

I think I have a Dell problem. I can't boot the ISO image for Gparted either.

Clean the lens in your burner or change it.

Resolved by replacing my CD burner software (Sonic RecordNow) with ISO Recorder.
