I accidentally deleted the taskbar from the top of the screen. How do I go about getting it back as I'm missing the Applications, Places and System tabs?

Right click on a panel --> "+Add to Panel" --> Menu Bar --> Click Add -->Notification Area --> Click Add

The Main Menu is the applications, the Notifications are is the little applet that allows you to see your currently running programs or otherwise known as i think the taskbar

Play around with the different widgets there, it could discover some cool widgets that you might use :D

As I understood you right, you deleted the complete top panel?
Maybe this will work:
Press:
ALT + F2
And type in the dialogue box:
gnome-panel
