I downloaded the i386 alternative installation .iso and burned it to a CD on my mac. The iso's md5 checks out, but when I try to run the installer CD on my pc laptop, I get the same file corrupt error every time, after 5 different CDs. Any ideas what might be happening here? On one of the installation attempts the process got nearly all the way through the progress bar before telling me that it had failed to install kernel-generic (i.e. it found no errors in the previous files) but every attempt after that failed earlier. Help!

What speed did you burn the iso to disk at? I would suggest if you have not already done so to burn at a low speed like x4 or less to avoid data corruption.

I'll try that - I don't know if it's relevant, but the pc I'm trying to install on has 128Mb of ram.

with only 128mb ram you might want to look at xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/get)and install with the alternate cd.
Xubuntu

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte) RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM) to run or 192 MB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte) RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM) to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte) RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM).
To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte) of free space on your hard disk.
Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

700 MHz x86 processor
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
8 GB of disk space
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
Sound card
A network or Internet connection

I've (a) added ram up to 256Mb (the laptop's maximum!) and (b) reburnt the installer CD at 8x speed, and now everything is working fine - thanks. I even have it wirelessly networked with an Edimax pc card.
