ubuntu wont update

the red button on the top says "A problem accurred when checking for the updates" on the top right when i hover over it
then when i right clikc it says

Show updates
Install all updates
Check for updates
Start package manager
Show notifyactions
Prefrences

but when i click them the update w indows shows up for a second then it closes its self

the only 1 that workds is the prefrences

please help me, i tryed to restart and nothing happend

Did you upgrade or is this a clean install?

what do u mean upgrade?
i installed it, then i got all the updates then i left my house for about a week then came back and tryed to update and not it wont update

I had a similar problem - I had to use the "Force Quit" in order to regain control of the computer. I fixed it after reading and following the information (and instructions) in the first 3 posts of this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=723361. You do have to use the "Terminal" to do this change.

It turns out that the last update somehow changed the IP address of the computer by appending my network name to the end of my computer name. By deleting this appended name, the hardware manager now calls up the administration password window (it was hanging up before, with no error message).

but it still didnt update

Top work thank you for the link fixed my system.

Same symptoms as you start update manager and would hang at the point start administration.
