View Full Version : [xubuntu] CD Rom Stops Working during install

The title says it all really. I have an old Panasonic Toughbook that I'm installing Xubuntu on. I have previously gotten Ubuntu and WinXP to install on this, but they were both too slow to be very useful. However, now it seems the CD drive is going wonky. I can boot into the install environment, but once it reaches 'Select and Install Software' the drive simply spins, and seeks, and spins and seeks, and never moves from 6%. I left it for several hours, and never got anywhere.

I'm hoping that I can either mount a network share, or just tell it to install the software directly from an internet repository, or even use a USB flashdrive with the CD image on it. But so far, my searching has been fruitless. Any help would be great.

You can install the unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) special boot utility program using Windows, and when you reboot you get a menu choice to install over the internet. After you install, unetbootin removes itself.
