Is it possible to install Ubuntu (or any other distro, for that matter) without destroying the Home folder and the data within? For example, if I had a system that had been running, say, Oan older version of Fedora that had some large data files on it that, while not totally crucial, would be time consuming to move to another drive, could I install a recent Ubuntu distribution without destroying those files?

Only if you have /home in it's own partition.
