View Full Version : [ubuntu] A series of very strange problems

First problem:

Whenever I log in, I get this message:

"Users $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session
and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644
permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable
by other users."

I have ignored this problem for a while, because it hasn't seemed to prevent me from doing anything.

Second problem:

My disk space is contracting and expanding. I will go for a long time with no trouble. Then, over the course of several days, the space on my hard disk will shrink down to nothing. After a while, the computer will slowly get all of its space back.

Third problem:

When I type in dmesg in the terminal, I get this:

[184677.667478] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [d9ca8f18] 'on'
[184683.659794] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [d9ca8f18] 'on'
[184689.652166] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [d9ca8f18] 'on'
[184695.644521] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [d9ca8f18] 'on'
[184701.636897] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [d9ca8f18] 'on'

...et ad aeternum.

I feel I must have angered the Ubuntu. I don't know any virgins I can offer as a sacrifice, either. So, I'm turning you folks. Any ideas?

To your first problem, I found this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=371052) that solves the problem. Try it out and let us know.

Second problem - where are you noticing the shrinking disk space? Are you using df or viewing in nautilus?

Can you please describe your hardware and list the make and model of each physical, electrical part unless you have a pre-built system and just give me the manufacturer website.

I'll get on the first one right away.

I am noticing the shrinkage in nautilus.

I have an HP Pavilion a610n. It is no longer available new, and so I couldn't find it on hp's website http://www.hp.com/

I did find some basic specs for it here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1625722,00.asp

I'll keep looking, anyway. Pax!

What's the status on your problems? Have you made any progress?

Well, I've got my space back for now. I've also installed a new hard drive. However, I've never done that with Ubuntu before, and so I'm a bit confused as to how I access it. I am going to ask that question here in a bit. I'll keep you posted here as to my progress. Thanks!

ok - I'm unsubscribing from the thread. Good luck!
