"MSI Wind gets official pricing and availability for the US: $399

by Nilay Patel

We already knew most of the details on the MSI Wind, but the Atom-based ultraportable just got official US pricing and availability today -- and just like we hoped, it got a little cheaper on the trip over. Although there'll be both 8.9-inch and 10-inch versions worldwide, we're only getting the 10-inch in both XP and Linux flavors, starting June 3rd. The SuSE version will feature that 1.6GHz Atom, 512MB of RAM, 80GB hard drive, and a 3-cell battery rated at 2.5 hours of use for $399, while the XP edition will come in at $549 with 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth, and a larger 6-cell battery good for 5.5 hours. There's also apparently going to be a $500 "base" XP edition, but details on that are pretty sparse at the moment. Looks like ASUS had better get that Atom-based Eee 900 out by June as planned if it wants to keep up, eh?"

The price difference between the States and the UK is exorbitant IMHO.
If $399 in the states and around 350 Pounds (= €475 = $735) in the UK.
I know people think that Europeans have a higher standard of living, but this is insane.

Is the Linux version available with a 6 cell battery, Atom processor and ssd (and still cheaper than Eee)?

Whoa this looks cool.. i've been looking for a cheap portable for my parents, and i've always thought linux laptop would be the easiest way to go (for me, as in maintaining).

Specs look fairly good for the price, too.

Looks kinda cool.

Only thing that I can point my finger at is that they decided to put a spinning disk in it instead of a solid-state drive of some kind; and that's a pretty big finger considering one is gonna haul it everywhere to gloat in front of eee 900 users.

But the $399 stateside one isn't the same model, it is the one with the smaller screen.

Specs of the Linux one released in the UK market at £320 are different to the US marketed $399 one,
UK Linux version = 1gb RAM + bigger screen.

Similarly the UK Xp one has different specs, it has the three cell battery, US one has six cell.

$150 extra for the XP version is, fortunately for us, a more difficult upsell, even if it does involve more RAM and a bigger battery. If the Cloudbook doesn't make it down here, I hope the MSI Wind does.

even if the specs are slightly different, it's still 'rip off britain' and euroland, probably

this one is on sale now (uk), though it doesn't mention what linux is installed:

This is how it's always been. I was on vacation in the US (Atlanta) last month, and virtually all electronics, from cell phones to computers, were half price of what I had to pay for them here, at home.

I'm gonna wait until the Dell and Acer to enter the market before I decide on which one to buy.

In a couple of weeks school starts for me again.

I was hoping to get a nice little sub-notebook, had my eyes set on the EEE-PC (Just the $400 800x480). My price range is about $400.. The MSI Wind I could possibly wait for, but the 3-cell vs 6-cell on XP? Meh.
