Splash screen user list is empty

After a normal update last week, my user list on the splash screen is empty. Users must type in their user name, then password, and login proceeds as usual. With the list, my kids can just click on their name, and enter the password. I am running Hardy on a P2 Dell. Splash screen selected is 'Human List'. If I select Enable Automatic Login in the Login Window Preferences, no users are displayed there, either. Not sure if I am missing a setting somewhere, or if there is a bug.
